10 Grid Drawing Tips for Beginners — Start Drawing Accurately Today
New to the grid method? These 10 essential tips will help you master proportions, choose the right grid size, and avoid common beginner mistakes.
1. Start with Simple Subjects
Begin with objects that have clear outlines — a coffee cup, a fruit, a simple face. Complex landscapes or highly detailed images can be overwhelming when you're learning.
2. Choose the Right Grid Density
For beginners, an 8×8 grid hits the sweet spot — enough detail to be accurate without being overwhelming. As you improve, increase to 12×12 or 16×16 for finer detail work.
3. Use Labels
Turn on coordinate labels (A1, B2, C3…) in your grid tool. This makes it impossible to lose track of which square you're working on.
4. Draw Lightly
Grid lines on your canvas should be barely visible. You'll need to erase them later. Use a 2H or harder pencil for the grid.
5-10. More Tips
Work one square at a time. Step back frequently to check proportions. Don't be afraid to increase grid density for complex areas like eyes. Use grayscale mode to focus on values. Practice with a sample image before working on important pieces.
